Richard J. Birkin
Former member of melodic post-hardcore band Crash Of Rhinos, Richard J. Birkin originally operated solo under his Emphemetry moniker. Over the last couple of years Birkin has focused on solo work - taking the various forms of soundtracks, string quartets, intimate folk songs, ambient soundscapes, instrumentals, solo piano and post-rock.
A self-taught composer, Birkin's string arrangements find inspiration in the compositions of Henryk Górecki and Philip Glass, Max Richter and Jóhann Jóhannsson. His recent foray into string arrangements forms the basis of Richard’s new album, 'Vigils'. The LP follows 2015’s 'Songs For Spoken Words', a multi-media-multi-format release featuring an EP of instrumental music alongside an animated app.
Other projects include ‘Aves’ which plays every day at noon in the Natural History gallery at Derby Museum, ’Night Sun’, a piece for string quartet and toy music box which is part of a touring installation on the streets of Leeds.
