Virinder Kalra book launch / Raj Veer / Zahid Lone, Waqas Arif & Prince Abbass
Drawing on examples of spiritual music from Punjab, Dr Virinder Kalra presents themes from his new book 'Sacred and Secular Musics: A Postcolonial Approach'. Talk followed by Q&A.
The evening will also feature musical performances from Manchester-based Raj Veer (on flute and pedal), and the trio of Zahid Lone (vocals), Waqas Arif (flute) and Prince Abbass (tabla) playing music from Kashmir, via Rochdale.
“In Sacred and Secular Musics, Virinder Kalra presents a remarkable abundance of original data on Sikh music, qawwali, and other genres in Pakistani and Indian Punjab, offering astute interpretive perspectives on these understudied genres and regional dynamics.” – Peter Manuel, Professor of Music, City University, New York
