Fuse Art Space is delighted to host a duo concert featuring tabla maestro Shabhaz Hussain and Sheffield based santur and tabla player John Ball. The event is funded by Near Neighbours, in conjunction with Arts Council England.
Shahbaz Hussain is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the foremost tabla virtuosos of his generation. He has received numerous accolades for his captivating performances, including the prestigious “Son of Lahore” award from the Government of Pakistan, in 2008. He is and has been much sought after across the world for his accompaniment skills, including by many master musicians of India & Pakistan - including Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Rais Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia and ghazal legend Ghulam Ali to name but a few.
He has developed his skills under the mentorship of three great tabla maestros, namely Ustad Shaukat Hussain Khan, Ustad Faiyaz Khan and Ustad Alla Rakha Khan.
Shahbaz is also passionate about passing on the knowledge of tabla to others. He is a dedicated teacher, running his own academy in Rochdale and regularly teaching at the University of Newcastle and the University of Huddersfield.
John Ball is Musician in Residence at the University of Sheffield. John will be performing on the one hundred stringed North Indian santoor, a type of hammered dulcimer played in Kashmir for many centuries, in the style of “Sufiana Mausiqi” which translates as a music connected with Sufi philosophy. He has studied santoor intensively with Sri Harjinder Pal Singh, a senior disciple of maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma who was responsible for introducing this model of Santoor into North Indian music in the 1950s.
